Kalamata

Kalamata is the capital of the Messinia and the second largest city in the Peloponnese. It’s known across the world for the figs and olives the region produces. The city has a chequered history, but unlike many sites in Greece, the city doesn’t date back to ancient times. There is much evidence of the Venetian rule the city was under in the Middle Ages. Kalamata was one of the first cities in Greece to be liberated from the Turks in the War of Independence. An earthquake in 1986 devastated the city, and the rebuilding continues to this day.

Thankfully, some of the historical sites were spared from the earthquake. The Kastro, found on the hill to the north of the city, is remarkably well preserved and gives wonderful views of the town and the Messinian Gulf. The Kastro also holds a festival in the summer hosting a programme of music, plays and other cultural events.

Kalamata’s waterfront runs for three kilometres, and is home to many restaurants and tavernas, the seafront a bustling concern in the summer. The seafood is as good as you can find in Greece.

Kalamata is also the town known for its silk and lacework. Silk mantillas and kerchiefs, made by nuns at a local monastery, may be purchases at the base of the Kastro.

       

The international airport, rail terminal and ferry port make Kalamata an important transport connection with links to all over the Greece and Europe. It is a great starting place for those wanting to explore the South Pelopeonnese, Mystras and Messinia.
