Karpenisi

Karpenisi sits high in the mountains in the centre of Greece. Well forested and hilly, it is great for trekking in the summer and close to the skiing fields in winter. The town has many amenities for tourists, and as it has a lot of local trade, there are plenty of traditional restaurants and bars there to be sampled.

There are a number of day trips to mountain villages available. The village of Proussos has a fascinating monastery with an icon that works miracles. The site is a place of pilgrimage and is particularly busy around the 15th of August. There is a bus trip available to the village of Agrinio, the buses using roads on cliff faces, and the spectacular nature of the drive is not for the faint hearted (or for those who suffer from motion sickness) but the stunning views make it worth the drive.
