Limnos is found in the centre of the North Eastern Aegean and is often overlooked by visitors, although it has much to offer those looking to get away from the well-walked tourist trail. It’s an island of unexpected beauty, which it is said takes some time to appreciate, but once there, the island’s quiet, rugged charm becomes overwhelmingly apparent.

In mythology, the island was the place that Zeus banished Hephaestus, the god of fire and patron of blacksmiths and craftsmen. The large, volcanic hills that surround Myrina, the capital, are testament to this, the craggy black hills being a dramatic backdrop to the waterfront. On top of these hills is a large, Genoese castle that can be accessed by road and gives wonderful views of the island and the Aegean Sea.

Myrina also has a long, sandy beach a few minutes walk from the town. The beaches around the island are some of the best in Greece, these safe, calm and sandy beaches are not as crowded as many of those beaches found on other islands. They are dotted around the coastline and best accessed by road.

The island is known for its agriculture, and the farms around the island grow muscat grapes and mulberry trees, and the vineyards to the east are worth a visit. The unusual muscat wine is can be sampled in the tavernas around the island.

Archaelogical sites on the island’s east are constantly uncovering more about times past. The Sanctuary of the Kaberoi in the north east, and Poliochni demonstrate the advanced civilisations of ancient times.

Limnos also is an island of pilgrimage for many Commonwealth visitors as the island is the location of cemeteries where the dead of the Gallipoli battle are buried. These cemeteries located on Moudros Bay to the south of the island.
