Drive along the west coast of the island before taking a winding road inland to the plateau of Filerimos, nearly 1,000 feet above sea level. Here stands the Church of Our Lady, built upon the foundations of the ancient Temple of Athena and the catacombs of early Christian times. The church was restored by the Knights of St. John and used as stables by the Turks before being rebuilt a little over 30 years ago. Construction began on the palace at the beginning of the 14th century and, although destroyed in 1856, was rebuilt in 1939.
