Mount Filerimos & Rhodes Town

Half Day

From € 0 .00 Person

First-time visitors to Rhodes are sure to enjoy this overview of essential sites. Drive along the west coast of the island before taking a winding road inland to the plateau of Filerimos, nearly 1,000 feet above sea level. Here stands the Church of Our Lady, built upon the foundations of the ancient Temple of Athena and the catacombs of early Christian times. The church was restored by the Knights of St. John and used as stables by the Turks before being rebuilt a little over 30 years ago. The restored monastery is still occupied, and the barrel-vaulted Chapel of St. George has some noteworthy 15th century frescoes. Back in Rhodes, your walking tour of the old walled town begins. Lining its stone-paved lanes are grand Medieval structures, each recalling the Knights of St. John and their Turkish conquerors. Your guide recounts the town's fascinating past as you walk along the Knights Road, one of the town's oldest and most magnificent thoroughfares. Built along the route of an ancient street dating back to 408 B.C., the road leads to the Palace of the Grand Masters, a fortress deliberately built to dominate the town and the harbors. Construction began on the palace at the beginning of the 14th century and, although destroyed in 1856, was rebuilt in 1939. The floors are covered with ancient mosaics from the island of Kos while an impressive marble staircase leads to the upper floor. From this level you'll have panoramic views over the city of Rhodes. Adding to the vitality of the old town, there are many inviting shops, giving a modern touch to the Medieval picture. Your tour concludes back at the pier.

Fabulous trip and attention to detail!

Anthony Alagiah with Antelope Travel planned the perfect family trip for us in June 2023. Anthony was a pleasure to work with, he communicated in detail and was very responsive to any questions I had and even stayed in touch while we were in Greece.
This was our first visit to Greece and he patiently guided me during the planning process and planned perfect itineraries for Athens, the islands and the mainland so we could experience a variety of different parts of Greece. Keeping three teenage boys engaged and interested isn't always easy but all of Anthony's tours, tour guides and activities worked perfectly for all of us!
We had many air, land and sea transfers and Anthony's planning and his partners ensured that everything went smoothly for us.
We were referred to Anthony from friends and I highly recommend him! I have now referred other friends to him, as thanks to his expertise, we had a fantastic family trip to Greece.

Loved my experience with Antelope!

Anthony at Antelope Travel planned an AMAZING trip for my family. We spent two days in Athens and explored the historical sites there. Our tour guide for the Parthenon, Natassa, was awesome. She was so knowledgable about ancient Greece and we loved having her guide us through the ruins and the museum.
Next we went to Mykonos and had another amazing guide there named Jenny. She was funny and told us about the culture and history of the island. The hotel we stayed at was awesome and my two daughters loved the pool there. We took a yacht to a private island then toured Delos and really had a lot of family fun there. We also loved shopping in Chora and found that the island was easy to get around on the bus.
Our next stop was the breath taking island of Santorini where we stayed in a pituresque villa with our own swimming pool. The final day we took a catamaran cruise around the island, swam, snorkled and ended the trip with an amazing sunset.
Anthony thought of everything and planned our trip so well. I would recommend Antelope Travel to anyone wanting to explore the beauty that Greece has to offer.
