Embark on a captivating moderate circular hiking tour that combines Naxos’ natural beauty with its rich cultural heritage.
The journey begins in the charming village of Chalki, historically an important administrative and trade center. From here, the trail leads across the lush Tragea plateau, home to an impressive collection of well-preserved Byzantine churches. Highlights include Agios Marina, Agios Georgios Diasoritis (11th century AD), and the churches of Agios Antonios, Agios Nikolaos, and Panagia Rachidiotissa in Monitsia (Rachi).
The path winds through scenic oak forests to the early Christian Panagia Drosiani, one of the oldest and most significant churches in the Cyclades. Upon reaching the village of Moni, hikers can pause to enjoy stunning views of southern Naxos, offering a moment to reflect and take in the surroundings.
The second part of the hike passes through verdant orchards, olive groves, and diverse woodlands, bringing you to the quaint villages of Kaloxylos and Akadimi. Near Kaloxylos, visit the Byzantine Panagia Damniotissa church, while in Akadimi, the historic Papadakis Tower stands as a testament to the area’s rich past.
